DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa State softball team (15-18, 0-3 Big 12) fell to Drake (20-11, 9-0 MVC) on Tuesday at Ron Buel Field by a score of 9-5. Freshman Kaylee Bosworth posted a career-high three RBIs in the game on two hits.
Drake 9, Iowa State 5
The Cyclones came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, as they put four runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Cathlin Bingham reached on an error, followed by a walk for Aly Cappaert to set the board for Iowa State. Sophomore Kelsey McFarland then walked to load the bases with one out. Nychole Antillon was next to the plate and hung in the batter's box to take a pitch off the elbow, bringing Bingham into score.
An RBI single up the middle by Sammie Hildreth put another run on the board, as Cappaert scored from third, and the bases remained loaded. Freshman Kaylee Bosworth then laced a double to center field, bringing two more Cyclone runs to the plate before Drake could get out of the inning.
Kirsten Caudle recorded the first triple of her career, and Iowa State's second on the season, in the top of the third inning. Caudle's hit to left-center came with two outs, but left her in scoring position for Bosworth. The freshman stepped to the plate and collected her third RBI of the day on a single to right, giving the Cyclones a 5-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with their first run of the day in the home half of the third, however. After two swinging strikeouts for Iowa State starter Emma Hylen, Kelsey Wright and Kennedy Frank put back-to-back base hits together. Megan Sowa put Drake on the board with a hard-hit ball to left, scoring Wright from third. The Cyclones got out of the inning on a nice defensive play by third baseman Sally Woolpert to get the runner at first and preserve the 5-1 ISU lead.
Momentum swung in Drake's favor in a big way in the bottom of the fifth inning, and it was started by a lead-off solo home run from Tasha Alexander. The Bulldogs then scored two more on a bases loaded single from Taryn Pena to make it 5-4. Two additional Drake runs came to the plate on a hit by pitch and a walk, as the Bulldogs took their first lead of the day. The inning came full circle, as Alexander finished things off with a two-RBI single to center, giving Drake an 8-5 lead through five innings.
Drake tacked one more run on the board in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Kailee Smith. The Cyclones were unable to respond, as the Bulldogs went on to win, 9-5.
