DENTON, Texas – Iowa State (15-13) split a doubleheader with North Texas (10-13) on Wednesday at Lovelace Stadium. The Cyclones rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take down the Mean Green 7-3 in game one, but could not overcome a UNT offensive explosion, falling 9-6 in game two.
Taylor Nearad tied a single-game school record with three doubles in game one, while Sami Williams stayed hot at the plate, going 3-of-5 with a home run in the ISU victory.
Iowa State 7, North Texas 3
The Cyclones rallied for their largest come-from-behind victory of the 2018 season in game one vs. North Texas. The Mean Green came out of the gates and scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second inning. UNT's Rhylie Makawe bunted for an RBI base hit for the first run of the game, and Sam Rea followed with a two-run homer to right center, putting Iowa State in an early 3-0 hole.
The Cyclones got one run back in the ensuing frame, as Sami Williams notched a base hit and then scored on a triple from Sydney Stites, her second of the season.
Following scoreless efforts in the fourth and fifth innings, Iowa State finally broke out offensively to take their first lead of the day in the top of the sixth. Kirsten Caudle notched a lead-off base hit and Jackie Chairez walked to put two runners on with two outs for Williams. She then crushed a home run to dead center field, lifting ISU to a 4-3 advantage. It was her third home run in the last two games after a pair of dingers on Tuesday vs. UT Arlington.
Iowa State secured its lead in the top of the seventh with another two-out rally. Nearad picked up her third double of the game, followed by an infield single for Caudle. Nychole Antillon then blooped an RBI single down the right field line, extending the lead to 5-3. Chairez followed suit with an RBI single of her own to center field.
The Cyclones notched an additional run when pinch runner Skyler Ramos raced home on a North Texas wild pitch, putting ISU ahead 7-3.
Emma Hylen picked up her fifth win of the season, going 6.0 innings while giving up three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Brianna Weilbacker pitched the final inning, striking out the side to secure Iowa State's fourth consecutive win. It marked Iowa State's largest comeback victory of the season.
North Texas 9, Iowa State 6
Iowa State had to work from behind once again in game two at Lovelace Stadium, but was unable to overcome a flurry of North Texas home runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
UNT jumped out to a 1-0 lead, striking first on a Nicole Ochotnicki RBI single to right field.
The Cyclones answered back with two runs in the third inning, capitalizing on a pair of Mean Green errors on hard-hit balls in the infield. Stites scored ISU's first run as Kaylee Bosworth reached on the second UNT miscue. Antillon later hung in the batter's box and was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to give Iowa State a 2-1 lead. UNT quickly re-gained advantage with two runs in the home half of the third. Sam Rea put the Mean Green back in front with an RBI single down the right field line.
A wild fourth inning saw nine runs come across, six of which were scored by UNT, as North Texas took control of the game with three home runs in the frame. Nearad smacked an RBI double to left center, followed by a two-RBI double for Kaylee Bosworth, as Iowa State went back ahead 5-3.
However, back-to-back-to-back home runs by Lacy Gregory, Ochotnicki and Hanna Rebar put the home team back in the driver's seat with a 9-5 advantage.
Kaila Konz scored in the top of the fifth on UNT's fifth error of the game with the bases loaded, but the Mean Green got out of trouble and put the game away on defense.
