FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Iowa State (15-15) dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the Wooo Pig Classic at Bogle Park, falling 7-1 to Tulsa (16-10) before an 8-1 loss to host Arkansas (17-5).
Tulsa 7, Iowa State 1
The Golden Hurricanes showed off their explosive offense, hitting three home runs in the contest, while Iowa State struggled to hit with runners in scoring position in the opening game of the tournament.
The Cyclones found success putting runners on base, notching 10 hits against 2017 All-American pitcher Emily Watson, but ended the game 1-of-14 at the plate with runners on base and 0-of-9 with runners in scoring position. The top of the ISU order contributed the bulk of the offense, as Sami Williams had three base hits, followed by Sydney Stites and Taylor Nearad with two each.
Tulsa got on the board first, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first on RBIs by Haley Meinen and Tori Stafford. A solo home run in the top of the fourth by Rhylie Spell extended the TU lead to 3-0, and a three-run shot in the fifth by Stafford made it 6-0.
Williams put Iowa State on the board in the home half of the fifth, crushing a solo home run to center field. The homer was her sixth in the last eight game and her eighth of the season, matching her 2017 season output in which she was a First Team All-Big 12 selection.
A solo home run by Meinen in the top of the seventh capped the scoring at 7-1.
Arkansas 8, Iowa State 3
The Razorbacks jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Katie Warrick's RBI single up the middle put Arkansas on the board, but Iowa State worked out of a bases-loaded jam to end the inning with no further damage done.
Warrick's bat continued to be the difference, as the Arkansas junior hit a pair of home runs later in the game to help the Razorbacks pull away. She hit a two-run shot in the third, and a solo homer to left in the fifth to put Iowa State in a 4-0 hole.
Iowa State scratched out its first run of the game in the top of the sixth inning, sparked by a one-out double to right field by Stites. Kaylee Bosworth then ripped an RBI single to left field, as head coach Jamie Pinkerton waived Stites around third base, and the junior was safe on a play at the plate. The Cyclones would later put runners on the corners with two outs, but were unable to capitalize.
Arkansas answered back and then some in the bottom of the sixth, as Hannah McEwen hit a three-run home run to center field, extending the lead to 7-1. The Razorbacks tacked on their final run of the game on a Cyclone fielding error.
The Cyclones continued to fight to their last out, scoring twice the top of the seventh. Logan Schaben, pinch-hitting in her first at-bat of the game, notched a two-out base hit to left field followed by a single up the middle by Williams. Stites followed suit with a base hit to left, loading the bases. Taylor Nearad then laced a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Schaben and Williams.
However, Arkansas relief pitcher Caroline Hedgcock would put a stop to ISU's rally there, defeating the Cyclones 8-3.
