CYCLONE HEADLINES
1. The Cyclones are looking to build on a spirited effort in their Big 12 opener on Sep. 27 at West Virginia. Despite falling 2-0 in Morgantown, Iowa State tallied six shots on goal, to just five for the Mountaineers. The Cyclone surrendered just one shot on goal in the second half.
2. Head coach Tony Minatta shuffled his lineup for the start of conference play, and it paid dividends. Most notably, freshman Abbey Van Wyngarden started at the forward position for the first time in her career and lead the Iowa State attack with three shots, all of which were on target.
3. Iowa State's six shots on goal were tied for a season-high (vs. Omaha) and were its most ever in the eight-match series vs. West Virginia that dates back to 2012. The Cyclones had tallied six shots on goal combined in their previous five meetings vs. WVU.
4. The Cyclones had a season-high five field players that played the entire 90 minutes in the Big 12 opener at West Virginia. Mira Emma, Courtney Powell and Marin Daniel and played 90 minutes for the first time this season, while freshman defender Olivia Wee played a season-high 59 minutes. Center back Taylor Bee is the lone ISU field player that has played all 902 available minutes this season.
5. Junior goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg tallied her second shutout of the season vs. Omaha, and the sixth of her career. Schwichtenberg has gathered in a career-high nine saves twice this season, and now leads the Big 12 with 47 saves in 10 matches. Her .758 save percentage ranks No. 7 in the Big 12.
6. Schwichtenberg, a native of Medina, Minn., spent all 1,875 available minutes between the posts last season for Iowa State and was the Big 12's regular season leader in saves (100) and saves per game (5.26).
7. Mira Emma, a native of Wheaton, Ill., was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for her efforts vs. SIUE and Saint Louis. She was the first Cyclone to earn a weekly award from the conference since Klasey Medelberg was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25, 2016.
8. The win at SIUE was Iowa State's first overtime victory since Oct. 21, 2016, when Medelberg scored a golden goal at No. 24 Baylor. A season-high eight freshmen saw playing time in Iowa State's 2-1 victory at SIUE
9. Junior Courtney Powell also notched her first goal of the 2019 campaign in Iowa State's win over the Cougars, giving the Cyclones a go-ahead goal in the 46th minute. Powell won a header at the far post off an assist from Abbey Van Wyngarden.
10. The offensive prowess of Tony Minatta's freshman class has been on display early in 2019. Including ISU's two exhibition matches, freshmen have accounted for nine of Iowa State's 12 goals. Emma (5) and redshirt freshman Kenady Adams (3) are Iowa State's points leaders this season. Freshmen have delivered four of ISU's six regular season goals, and account for all six assists.
11. Iowa State racked up a season-high 26 shot attempts in its 1-0 victory over Omaha, to just eight for the Mavericks, and earned a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks. Emma scored the game-winner on a header in the 72nd minute of the match for her first career goal.
12. The Cyclones are scheduled to play five matches this season against teams currently ranked in the United Soccer Coaches top-25 poll, four of which will be road contests for Iowa State. The last time the Cyclones faced more than five ranked teams in the same season was 2008.
