AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-8, 0-2 Big 12) dropped a 1-0 double overtime heartbreaker to No. 18 Texas Tech (10-1-1, 2-0-1 Big 12) on Thursday night at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones fought tooth and nail with the Red Raiders, but fell on a golden goal by Sierra Jones in the 108th minute.
How It Happened
The Cyclones weathered the TTU attack early, including a critical early sequence in which ISU defender Shealyn Sullivan made a spectacular play to head away a Red Raider shot driven right at the upper right-hand corner of the goal. A diving save moments later forced starting goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg to exit the game just over eight minutes into the match.
Iowa State earned its best opportunity of the night in the 33rd minute, when Kassi Ginther played a beautiful ball forward to freshman Abbey Van Wyngarden. The native of West Des Moines, Iowa, got in behind the Texas Tech back line and fired a shot past the keeper's outstretched arms and off the goal's right post, turning the Cyclones away empty-handed.
The match's defining moment came in the 108th minute, when the ball pinged around in the box and landed at the feet of Jones on the outer edge of the 18-yard box. Jones sent her right-footed shot into the back of the net for the game-winner to lift Texas Tech to victory.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Georgia Wimmer. The freshman goalkeeper entered in the game's ninth minute and was tremendous while facing the Big 12's top scoring offense. Wimmer made four saves on the night to help bolster the Cyclone defensive effort.
Coach Speak
"We battled," said head coach Tony Minatta. "Nothing but proud of the team and the effort we put out there. We really put a good game together and it's unfortunate to give the game up in the last two minutes of the second overtime. I thought we deserved a point out that. We had some incredible opportunities. I'm just really proud of the team."
