AUSTIN, Texas – Iowa State (17-11, 0-1 Big 12) fell 11-0 to No. 10 Texas (27-6, 1-0 Big 12) in its Big 12 opener on Friday night at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
The Cyclones struggled to generate offense against UT ace Miranda Elish, who tallied a five-inning no-hitter on the night.
Texas 11, Iowa State 0
The Longhorns jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs on two hits in the bottom of the second inning, and never looked back. Texas put its first three batters of the inning aboard, thanks to a McKenzie Parker lead-off base hit, a Cyclone fielding error and a fielder's choice. A second ISU error allowed a pair of unearned runs to score, followed by a sacrifice fly, giving UT a 3-0 lead before the Cyclones worked their way out of the frame.
Texas manufactured four more runs on just two hits in the fourth. UT capitalized on Iowa State's third fielding error of the game, as well as two walks and one batter hit by pitch, taking a commanding 7-0 lead after four innings of play.
Elish put the finishing touches on the Texas win, hitting a walk-off grand slam in the home half of the fifth to secure an 11-0 run-rule victory of the Longhorns.
The Cyclones were never able to figure out Elish, who allowed just one base runner and no hits on the night with eight strikeouts.
