CYCLONE HEADLINES
1. The Cyclones are coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory at SIUE on Sunday. Freshman Mira Emma scored the golden goal on a header in the 92nd minute to secure the win. The goal was assisted by fellow freshman Claudia Najera. It was the second time in the last three matches that a Najera assist to Emma accounted for a game-winning goal.
2. Emma, a native of Wheaton, Ill., was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week for her efforts vs. SIUE and Saint Louis. She is the first Cyclone to earn a weekly award from the conference since Klasey Medelberg was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25, 2016.
3. Sunday's win at SIUE was Iowa State's first overtime victory since Oct. 21, 2016, when Medelberg scored a golden goal at No. 24 Baylor.
4. Junior Courtney Powell also notched her first goal of the 2019 campaign in Iowa State's win over the Cougars, giving the Cyclones a go-ahead goal in the 46th minute. Powell won a header at the far post off an assist from Abbey Van Wyngarden.
5. A season-high eight freshmen saw playing time in Iowa State's 2-1 victory at SIUE. Midfielder Eva Steckelberg, a native of Ames, Iowa, made the first start of her career, and defender Olivia Wee made her Cyclone debut.
6. The offensive prowess of Tony Minatta's freshman class has been on display early in 2019. Including ISU's two exhibition matches, freshmen have accounted for nine of Iowa State's 12 goals. Emma (5) and redshirt freshman Kenady Adams (3) are Iowa State's points leaders this season. Freshmen have delivered four of ISU's six regular season goals, and account for all six assists.
7. Iowa State racked up a season-high 26 shot attempts in its 1-0 victory over Omaha, to just eight for the Mavericks, and earned a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks. Emma scored the game-winner on a header in the 72nd minute of the match for her first career goal.
8. Emma's header came off a beautiful feed into the box by Najera, who sent the ball in after making a run to the end line out wide to the left. It was the first assist of Najera's collegiate career. The native of St. Charles, Ill. has started four of eight matches this season at midfield.
9. Junior goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg tallied her second shutout of the season vs. Omaha, and the sixth of her career. Schwichtenberg gathered in a career-high nine saves vs. Purdue and now leads the Big 12 with 35 saves in eight matches.
10. Schwichtenberg, a native of Medina, Minn., spent all 1,875 available minutes between the posts last season for Iowa State and was the Big 12's regular season leader in saves (100) and saves per game (5.26).
11. The center back position once again looks to be a strength for the Cyclones in 2019. Sophomore Taylor Bee and senior Carly Langhurst have impressed with their play early on, serving as anchors for the ISU defense. Bee is the lone field player to play all 722 available minutes so far this season.
12. The Cyclones are scheduled to play five matches this season against teams currently ranked in the United Soccer Coaches top-25 poll, four of which will be road contests for Iowa State. The last time the Cyclones faced more than five ranked teams in the same season was 2008.
13. UCLA was Iowa State's first opponent ranked in the top-5 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll since Oct. 18, 2015, when the Cyclones faced No. 3 West Virginia. UCLA was also the highest-ranked non-conference foe Iowa State has faced since playing No. 3 Stanford on Sep. 15, 2013.
14. In 2018, Minatta led Iowa State to its second postseason bid in the last three years. He guided a battle-tested Cyclone squad to a strong finish, winning their final two conference matches, to lock in the bid to Kansas City for the Big 12 Tournament. Iowa State played the 13th-toughest overall schedule in the nation last season, and the fourth-toughest regular season schedule, per the NCAA.
