Cancelled Event: Soccer versus #15 Memphis

09.20.2019 | Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Iowa State (3-6) fell 3-0 to No. 11 Memphis (8-1) on Friday night at Murphy Track & Soccer Complex. Hannah Cade and Kassi Ginther both fired a pair of shots to lead the Cyclone attack, but Iowa State was unable to find the back of the night.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones recovered nicely after a Memphis free kick by Kimberley Smit (3') gave the Tigers an early lead, playing a strong first half. Iowa State was persistent in the attack, and played a strong half despite being unable to come up with an equalizer. However, a second Memphis goal early in the second stanza flipped momentum back in the Tigers' favor.
Memphis midfielder Lisa Pechersky ran down a through ball to the end line out wide to the left, and played in a cross to the far post. She found teammate Mya Jones, who converted on a header to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. The Tigers added a third goal in the 59th minute by Clarissa Larisey, and Iowa State was unable to find and answer.
Coach Speak
"Obviously a really good team, and a chance to play on the road against the No. 11 team in the country," said head coach Tony Minatta. "I thought we had some great moments of quality soccer and really showed what we can do. We just need to put it together consistently and not have the mental lapses that we had when you're playing against a team like that. However, moving forward into conference play, it's a new season. We've learned a lot and grown as a team. I think we're in a good position with some of the soccer we've played to go into conference and be able to accomplish our goals."
On Deck
The Cyclones will open Big 12 play with a trip to Morgantown, W. Va., to play West Virginia on Friday at 6 p.m. CT at Dick Dlesk Stadium. The match will be streamed live on WVUSports.com.
