MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Iowa State (3-7) fell 2-0 at West Virginia (6-3-1) on Friday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Cyclones battled a formidable West Virginia side throughout, tallying six shots on goal to five for the Mountaineers, but were unable to sneak one past WVU's outstanding goalkeeper Rylee Foster.
Freshman forward Abbey Van Wyngarden lead the way offensively, putting all three of her shots on goal, followed by two shots on target for fellow newcomer Mira Emma.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones earned a golden opportunity to grab momentum early in Friday's contest, and nearly converted in the 11th minute. Van Wyngarden took a free kick from the outer edge of the attacking third, and her ball into the box pinged around before senior Marin Daniel won a header and fired a dangerous shot on goal. Daniels header forced the WVU goalkeeper to make a diving save, punching the ball over the net.
Following an Iowa State corner kick, the Mountaineers countered and Jade Gentile made a run to the end line before playing a cross into the middle of the box. Her ball found Jessica Lisi, who put the chance away at point-blank range for the first goal of the match.
West Virginia tallied an additional first-half goal off a corner kick in the 27th minute, as Stefany Ferrer-vanGinkel scored on a corner kick played in from Lizzie Mayfield.
Iowa State regrouped, and allowed just one WVU shot on target after halftime, but had multiple dangerous chances kept out of the net by Foster.
Coach Speak
"Giving up the two early goals was tough," said head coach Tony Minatta. "It just comes down to urgency inside the box. The score doesn't reflect what happened on the field. Their keeper made some unbelievable saves. We just have to keep working and building from this because those games are going to start turning for us. The toughness and quality of soccer we showed today was encouraging."
