BOCA RATON, Fla. – Iowa State (7-0) picked up a pair of wins on day one of the FAU Strikeout Cancer Tournament on Friday. The Cyclones bested Ole Miss (3-3), 2-0, followed by a 6-3 victory vs. FAU (1-5).
With the win, the Cyclones improved to 7-0 on the season, tied for the best start in program history (2009).
Iowa State 2, Ole Miss 0
The Cyclones gutted out a 2-0 victory to open the day behind an excellent outing in the circle from starting pitcher Karlie Charles. The sophomore allowed just three hits on the day, and came through in the clutch repeatedly, leaving eight Rebel runners stranded throughout the day. Ole Miss put runners in scoring position in each of the first six innings, but Charles and her defense found a way to preserve the lead each time.
Iowa State tallied its first run in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on the lone Ole Miss defensive miscue of the day. Carli Spelhaug opened the game with a double to left center, and advanced to third on a fly ball off the bat of Mikayla Ramos. Spelhaug then scored on a throwing error committed by the Ole Miss second baseman to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
The ISU defense came through in a crucial moment in the bottom of the third inning. Following a single and a walk to open the frame, the Rebels had runners on first and second with nobody out. Charles then stuck out Abbey Latham, and the runners advanced to second and third on an ISU error that sent the ball to the outfield. However, freshman right fielder Milaysia Ochoa threw out Ole Miss runner Blaise Biringer at the plate to preserve the 1-0 lead. Charles then induced a ground out to end the inning.
An insurance run crossed home plate in the top of the fifth. Skyler Ramos singled to center field with one out, and advanced on a wild pitch. Sami Williams then collected the lone RBI of the game with a base hit to center field, scoring the speedy Ramos from second, making it a 2-0 Cyclone lead.
Charles slammed the door shut from there, tallying a complete game shutout. She put in 7.0 innings of work with two strikeouts to help the Cyclones improve to 6-0 on the year.
Iowa State 6, FAU 3
Carli Spelhaug gave the Cyclones a spark once again to lead-off the second game of the day vs. host FAU. The sophomore drew a walk, and then stole second base. She would then come in to score on a RBI double to right center by Mikayla Ramos, putting the Cyclones in front 1-0.
Ramos keyed the Cyclone offense once again in the top of the third. Sami Williams picked up a two-out base hit, and was moved over to third on Ramos' second double of the day on a shot down the left field line. Williams was able to score later in the inning on a FAU wild pitch.
Freshman pitcher Saya Swain earned her first career start against the Owls and the Cyclone newcomer showed promising signs in the circle. Swain held FAU scoreless through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. The Owls plated two in the frame, and Swain exited after 3.2 innings of action with three strikeouts, while giving up two runs on three hits.
Williams broke up the tie in short order in the top of the fifth. The senior crushed a lead-off home run to center field. It was her third homer of the year and put the Cyclones in front 3-2.
FAU responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI single from Cammeo Presutti.
The back-and-forth affair continued in the top of the sixth, with Carli Spelhaug giving Iowa State the lead for good with a RBI double to left center, scoring Lea Nelson. The Cyclones extended their lead to 5-3 when Skyler Ramos scored on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Mikayla Ramos.
Alesia Ranches tacked one final run on for good measure, crushing a solo home run in the seventh inning, as the Cyclones improved to 7-0 for just the second time in school history.
