AMES, Iowa – Iowa State recorded 20-plus shots for the second straight match, as the Cyclones came away with a 1-0 victory over SIUE Sunday at the Cyclone Soccer Complex on Senior Day.
The Cyclones moved to 2-3 on the year with their second shutout, while SIUE dropped to 1-3. Iowa State returns to action on Thursday, as the Cyclones host Memphis. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at the Cyclone Soccer Complex. The match will be available on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
"Two weeks in a row, we've given away so few chances and created so many chances, that clearly we're doing a good job with that," Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon said. "We have a very young team and we have a long way to go. No one said it was going to happen overnight. I'm really proud of how they've battled these last couple of weeks. It was a tough one last week and so to come back and dominate in the same way it feels good."
After a scoreless first half, Lauren McConnell scored her second goal of the season in the 76th minute to give the Cyclones the lead. After a Cyclone shot attempt was blocked, Mira Emma tapped the ball to McConnell for the goal. It was the third assist of the season for Emma and the sixth of her career.
Emma tied a season-high with five shot attempts. McConnell, Morina Suter-Doerig, Claudia Najera, Emma and Magdalena Keck all had two shots on goal. Jordan Silkowitz faced just one shot on goal in the match, recording a save, as she pitched her fourth career shutout. Silkowitz improved to 1-2 on the year in the net. Iowa State finished with a 22-2 advantage in shots, including a 15-0 edge in the second half. The Cyclones had an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Prior to the match, Iowa State honored three players for senior day in Kenady Adams, Taylor Bee and Brooke Miller. The trio have played in 131 matches over their career as Cyclones.
