Kicking Off
Head Coach Matt Fannon will get his second crack at win number 100 this Thursday as Iowa State takes to the road for its first away contest of the season. The Cyclones will look to down Drake for the first time since 2015, coming off their first setback of the season on Sunday against Creighton.
Iowa State took an early 1-0 lead against Creighton over the weekend, scoring their third goal of the season in the first 15 minutes of match time. Creighton rallied, however, and used a physical game plan to overcome the deficit and use two second-half goals to win 2-1.
Drake is also entering the game coming off its first setback of the season, as the Bulldogs fell to a different Big 12 foe, Kansas, on Sunday. Drake will look to earn its first win of the season over the Cyclones.
From the Notebook
Leading the Cyclones
Iowa State's offense is led by redshirt junior Magdalena Keck. Keck has a pair of goals on the young season, marking her first multi-goal season of her career. Morgan Furmaniak leads the team in shots with seven, as the senior transfer has a goal to her name.
Also with a goal to her name is Chloe Broughton. Broughton, who played the full 90 in the opener while also scoring her first career goal, missed the last contest against Creighton. Yira Yoggerst is the lone Cyclone with an assist. Freshman defender Makenna Marshall leads all fielders in minutes played (165), while Isabella Agrusso is right behind her (162).
Avery Gillahan has played all 180 minutes this season in the net, allowing a pair of goals through two contests. Gilly tallied her fourth career shutout and first of the season against Western Illinois in the season opener. She currently has four saves.
Opponent Outlook
Through two contests, Drake has a pair of players who have recorded points on the season. Isabella Balsley, a freshman from Johnston, holds the team's only score, knocking one through against St. Thomas in the opener.
Lily Overstreet, a senior from West Des Moines, is the other point scorer, having assisted on Balsley's goal. Five Bulldogs have played 150-plus minutes through two games, with keeper Addie Ford leading the way.
Speaking of Ford, the sophomore is back in the net for Drake after having started 17 matches last season as a true freshman. She's allowed two goals through two games and has seven saves on 29 shots faced.
Series History
In what's been a closely contested series, Iowa State leads Drake 6-4-4. The Bulldogs have won the last two meetings between the schools and hold a 2-1-3 record when playing the Cyclones in Des Moines. Coach Fannon has faced Drake just once, losing in Des Moines, 1-2, in 2021.
