AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (23-19, 11-7 Big 12) was unable to complete its second Big 12 series sweep of the season Saturday, as Kansas (19-22, 5-13 Big 12) salvaged the weekend by taking game three, 13-5, in five innings.
The Jayhawks scored all 13 runs across innings two through five as they earned their second conference run-rule victory of the season. It also marked the second-straight day that KU was able to score in four-straight innings against the Cyclones.
Six Cyclones collected a hit on the day, with Ashley Minor and McKenna Andrews leading the way in the RBI department, as each had two. Isabelle Nosan scored a team-best two runs, while three ISU athletes drew walks.
Jaiden Ralston (8-7) got the start for ISU, making her third appearance of the weekend. After three frames, she would be replaced by Abby Huhn, who made her first appearance of the weekend, before Lauren Schurman closed things out.
The Kansas bats were led by leadoff batter Presley Limbaugh, who went 3-4 with an RBI. Cambell Bagshaw had a game-high five RBI, while Olivia Bruno had four as each had a homer. In the circle, Katie Brooks went the distance, allowing five runs on six hits and striking out four ISU players.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first from each dugout, the Kansas offense got into a flow and scored its 13 runs across the next four frames.
With a runner on second and two outs, Anna Soles singled to left field to score KU's first run of the game to make it 1-0 through two frames.
The Jayhawks added another three runs in the third, driving in a pair of singles on an Olivia Bruno shot to center field as they pushed their lead to 4-0.
Iowa State got on the board in the bottom of the inning, as a leadoff single from Isabelle Nosan was promptly homered in by Andrews, who jumped on the first pitch she saw, clobbering it over the left field fence for her second dinger of the season.
Kansas hit right back, though, in the fourth, scoring an additional five runs. A Hailey Cripe two-RBI double got the scoring started before Campbell Bagshaw homered a few at-bats later to drive in three more runs. At the midway point of the fourth, it was 9-2 in favor of the Jayhawks.
The Cyclones got a bit of a rally going in the fourth, plating three to cut the KU lead to three. Angelina Allen led off with a walk before Reagan Bartholomew blasted a single up the middle to put two on. A Nosan walk would load the bases with two outs and bring up Ashley Minor in a pinch-hit appearance. The fourth pitch of the at-bat, ball three, got past the KU catcher to allow Allen to score to make it 9-3. The very next pitch, Minor blooped one over the shortstop's glove to drive in a pair and make it 9-5.
KU pulled away, though, in the fifth, scoring another four runs to go up eight. The Jayhawks would handle ISU in the bottom of the frame to earn the five-inning run-rule victory.
