Rachel Joseph has shown she is not only a top athlete at Iowa State but also in the nation. The sprinter posted the second-fastest time throughout both NCAA West and East Prelims to earn the No. 2 seed in the 400m. Joseph went 50.95 in the first round and followed that up with 50.66 to take down the outdoor record for the sixth time. The junior also had a 49.77 split in the 4x400m, the only sub-50 split in either region. Joseph has gone sub-51 four times this outdoor season alone and owns the top 16 400m times in school history.
Mikey McClain is the first Iowa State man to advance to nationals in the 200m since 1928, and second in school history. McClain has progressed rapidly, shown in his time drops this season beginning with a 2024 PR of 20.94 to his current school record of 20.30.
The women's 4x400m is nationals bound for the first time since 1982. Brooklyn Sandvig, Makayla Clark, Karynne David and Joseph went sub-3:30, an ISU first, with 3:29.68 as they automatically advanced with their heat finish.
Iowa State had another first as two are NCAAs bound in the steeple. Joash Ruto finished second overall in the West (8:28.86) while Quinton Orr grabbed the last time qualifier and finished 10th overall with 8:39.13 (No. 7 ISU).
Like NCAA West Prelims, NCAA Championships will be a four-day format with men competing on the first and third day and the women on the second and fourth. Field events, the 5,000m and 10,000m are all a final, while the 200m, 400m, 800m, steeplechase and 4x400m will have semifinals and a final. In the steeple, 12 will advance while nine advance in the 200m, 400m, 800m and 4x400m.
