MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Virginia Tech's Caroline Stolle scored the game's only run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Hokies a 1-0 win over Iowa State on Sunday, the final day the 2005 College of Charleston Cougar Classic. The Cyclones are now 1-8 on the season.
After the game entered the 10th inning, the international tiebreaker rule was applied with each team having a runner placed on second base. The Cyclones put senior Misty Kimura on second base and sophomore Katie Reichling laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Kimura to third. The next batter, junior Cary Akins, popped up to the second baseman, followed by a strike out by senior Diana Reuter. ISU was unable to capitalize on its scoring opportunity when senior Amber Wood struck out looking for the thrid out.
The Hokies, however, made the most of their opportunity in the bottom half of the inning. Stolle was put on second base and advanced to third base on teammate Kelsey Hoffman's sacrifice bunt to move Stolle into scoring position on third base. With two outs on the board and runners at first and third after an intentional walk was issued to Hokie Kellyey Brown, Caitlin Murphy drove in the winning run with a RBI single to centerfield.
The Cyclone pitching and defense held the Hokies to just five hits over 10 innings. However, the Cyclone offense was limited to just two hits on the day, one by sophomore Ashley Killeen in the first inning and the other one by Reichling. Sophomore Alyssa Ransom was on the mound for the Cyclones, going the distance and striking out three Virginia Tech batters. She is now 0-5 on the season.
Iowa State heads to the west coast next weekend to take part in the 2005 Fresno State Bulldog Classic (March 3-6). The Cyclones open the tournament on Thursday, March 3, against
