TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ? The Iowa State softball team pounded out 15 hits in two games, but it wasn't enough as the Cyclones fell to both Radford and No. 21 Florida State on Friday at the Florida State Tournament. Iowa State fell, 6-4, to Radford in the early game and suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Florida State later in the day. The Seminoles scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the losses, ISU is now 5-12 on the year.
Against Radford, the Cyclones jumped onto the scoreboard right away with a run in the first inning. The Highlanders, however, put together a stellar second stanza, pounding five runs to take a 5-1 lead to pull within 5-4, but Radford scored its final run in the bottom of the third to eventually take a 6-4 win. ISU had 11 hits on the day, while holding Radford to eight. Each team had two errors.
The Cyclones were led on offense by sophomore Katie Reichling, who had three hits, 2 RBIs and scored a run. Seven other Cyclones had hits in the game. Reichling and sophomore Alyssa Ransom split time on the pitching mound and combined to strike out three batters. Ransom took the loss, her record falling to 3-7.
Iowa State and Florida State played a defensive game right up until the end with neither team finding the scoreboard until the Seminoles scored in the bottom of the inning to win the game. After Iowa State found no offense in the top of the seventh, Florida State's Veronica Woodson hit a single to left field. After teammate Tatiana George stuck out, FSU hit a double and advanced to third right away on an error by ISU, which sent Woodson across the plate for the lone score of the game.
The Cyclones had four hits in the game, three of them by sophomore Ashley Killeen. Killeen had a solid day at the plate, going 3-for-3. Sophomore Fallon Johnson had ISU's other hit. Ransom was on the mound for the Cyclones. She pitched a complete game, striking out four FSU batters. Her record falls to 3-8.
