AMES, Iowa – Erin Johnson's first career home run was the highlight as the Iowa State softball squad fell 10-1 in six innings to the No. 16 Nebraska Cornhuskers Thursday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. The defeat drops Iowa State to 21-26 on the season and 3-13 in conference play. The Cornhuskers improve to 37-12 and 7-9 in Big 12 competition.
Iowa State did not get its offense going until the bottom of the fifth. After an Anna Cole strikeout, Johnson took Ashley Hagemann's first pitch to left field and just got it over the wall and right of the foul pole to reduce the Nebraska lead to 7-1. It was Johnson's first home run as a Cyclone.
Ashley Guile got the Huskers started in the second with a four-pitch walk. After Tatum Edwards popped out, Heidi Foland recorded Nebraska's first hit of the game with a single that split the shortstop and third baseman. Gabby Banda broke the game open for the Cornhuskers with a double to left-center field that brought home both runners to give NU a 2-0 advantage.
The Cornhuskers broke the game open in the top of the third. After retiring lead-off hitter Nikki Haget, Holliday allowed back-to-back singles to Julie Brechtel and Taylor Edwards. Brooke Thomason cleared the bases with a three-run home run that just found its way over the center field wall to give Nebraska a 5-0 lead.
NU added two more in the fifth frame on a two-run double by Guile that drove home Haget, who reached on an error by shortstop Cassie Knutson, and Morgan McCann, who was pinch-running for the walked Taylor Edwards. That moved the Cornhusker lead to 7-0.
Hagemann picked up the win for Nebraska to improve to 27-11 on the season. Hagemann pitched all six frames, allowing three hits and one run while walking two and striking out nine. Breeanna Holliday took the loss to drop to 3-4 on the season. The freshman pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs while walking and striking out one. Lauren Kennewell came in relief first, pitching 2 2/3 innings, scattering two hits and five runs, one earned, while walking three and striking out five. Tori Torrescano pitched the final two innings, not allowing a hit but walking one.
The Cyclones wrap up the regular season with a weekend doubleheader against No. 6 Missouri. Saturday's first game begins at 2 p.m. CDT and Sunday's showdown is scheduled for a noon CDT first pitch.
