AMES, Iowa – A phenomenal outing from freshman pitcher Savannah Sanders helped lead the Iowa State softball team (20-29, 1-11 Big 12) past Iowa (13-36, 3-17 Big Ten) in a 5-0 shutout in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk rivalry game on Tuesday. With the win, Iowa State ties the 2016 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. Iowa State earned at least a share of the of trophy for an unprecedented third consecutive year.
The Cyclones were outright champions in 2014 and 2015, and the schools tied in this year's competition.

The Cyclone offense got things started in the bottom of the second inning, giving the program record-setting crowd of 804 something to cheer about in the early going. Kelsey McFarland led off the inning with the first ISU hit of the day, followed by a double crushed off the fence in centerfield by Nychole Antillon.
The first run of the day came to the plate as Kirsten Caudle reached on a Hawkeye fielding error and McFarland raced home from third. Hope Scheffert later smacked an RBI single to right field to score Antillon, extending the Cyclone lead to 2-0.
The bottom of the fourth inning was more of the same, as Scheffert recorded her second RBI of the game on another single to right field, scoring Caudle. Brittany Gomez then got in on the action with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Sally Woolpert. A Cathlin Bingham RBI single scored Katie Dukes, and put Iowa State ahead 5-0.
Sanders and the Cyclone defense locked it down and secured the victory from that point forward. The freshman from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., pitched all seven innings, giving up no runs on just four hits, to go with five strikeouts, for a complete game shutout. It the eighth win of the season for Sanders.

Savannah Sanders. In the first Cy-Hawk game of her young ISU career, the freshman put together one of her best performances of the season. She was steady throughout, never allowing multiple hits in the same frame until the top of the seventh.
On Deck
The Cyclones will do battle with Texas this coming weekend in a three-game Big 12 series at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The first game of the series is set for Friday at 4 p.m.
