Cyclones Take Down SIUE On Mira Emma Golden Goal

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Iowa State (3-5) won a 2-1 overtime thriller against SIUE (2-3-1) on Sunday afternoon on a golden goal by freshman Mira Emma, assisted by Claudia Najera in the 92nd minute.
The Cyclones also got a gorgeous go-ahead goal in the first half when Abbey Van Wyngarden sent a cross into the box, finding junior Courtney Powell (46') to give ISU a 1-0 lead.
Turning Point of the Game
The momentum was in SIUE's favor entering overtime after the Cougars scored an equalizing goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. However, the Cyclones were undeterred. Junior goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg made an excellent save in the opening moments of overtime on a dangerous SIUE opportunity, and the Cyclones went the other way.
Najera, a freshman midfielder, got to the end line out wide to the left and sent in a perfect cross with her left foot. Najera's ball found its target, and Emma buried the chance in the back of the net for the golden goal. It was Emma's second game-winner of the season on as many goals.
Coach Speak
"It's a Sunday win on the road against a really good team," said head coach Tony Minatta. "We started off slow, but came out of the half and played some of the best soccer we've played this year. Got the first goal from Abbey Van Wyngarden to Courtney Powell. It was a great goal and purposeful play. To give up the goal with two minutes left, we could have shut down. We came out in the first period of overtime. Dayja makes a save, Claudia gets end line and sends it in and Mira Emma scores. The team is growing up. You're seeing a lot of quality on the field and we're going to keep building from here.
On Deck
The Cyclones are back on the road next weekend, when they will travel to Memphis, Tenn., to take on No. 14 Memphis on Friday at 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on Memphis Tiger Network.
