AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) kicked off the home-opening Cyclone Invite with a win over Saint Louis (5-2, 0-0 A-10) in three sets by scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 Friday night. It was ISU's sixth sweep of the season.
Lilly Wachholz had a match-leading 10 kills, her third match this season with 10-plus. Pam McCune and Nayeli Ti'a had eight kills apiece, with McCune achieving her total at .438 hitting. Iowa State outhit SLU .250-.050.
Morgan Brandt set the Cyclones up for the win with 37 assists through the three frames, also serving to an ace. Rachel Van Gorp once again led the match with 12 digs, putting up her 12th-straight match in double figures.
SET ONE
Iowa State stayed neck-in-neck with Saint Louis in the early goings, but after a score of 9-8, the Cyclones took over. Behind the serving of Van Gorp, ISU began building a sizable lead at 14-8 and kept control winning the set 25-14. Ti'a, making her ISU debut, had five kills in the set alone.
SET TWO
ISU took the first five points, but SLU responded taking a lead of their own. With the Billikens ahead 10-7, Iowa State fought back tying it at 12s after two-straight McCune kills. The lead was held by the Cyclones from there, as ISU went up in the match 2-0 with a set score of 25-20. Wachholz put down five kills in the second to lead all.
SET THREE
Maya Duckworth was a powerhouse in the third set, hitting her third in the frame alone to make it 7-5. Iowa State reached 15 points as Saint Louis held 10 as the frame hit the midway point. The visitors would get within three of ISU to follow, but ISU pushed forwarding securing the sweep by a third set of 15-18. Alea Goolsby was the set leader with five kills.
