AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (7-1, 0-0 Big 12) downed Omaha (3-4, 0-0 Summit) in four sets by scores of 25-14, 25-22, 19-25, 25-21. Freshman Alea Goolsby made her name known as she had a 20-plus kill match.
Goolsby put down a career-high 24 at .278 hitting through the four sets, also totaling seven digs, three blocks and three assists. The star had seven kills at .462 hitting in the first and continued her tear, also hitting seven in the third and eight in the fourth. ISU had 65 kills in the match.
Maya Duckworth continues her pursuit of reaching 1,000 career kills as the outside notched kill No. 900 and then some after totaling 13 in the match. Duckworth now holds 912 on her career.
Morgan Brandt had a season-high 48 assists, also sending three kills, an ace and putting up a block. Rachel Van Gorp had her third-career 20-plus dig match and first of the season having 23. Van Gorp was also stellar at the service line, providing Cyclone runs and an ace.
SET ONE
Pam McCune was aggressive in the first set, earning four kills on her first five swings without an error but it was the Goolsby show as she put down seven on 13 swings. Iowa State had a set season best of 19 kills in the frame alone, at an efficiency of .366.
SET TWO
The Mavericks kept up with the Cyclones for most of the set, but after two kills in a row from Alea Goolsby (22-19) ISU pulled out ahead. McCune was strong with kills as well, earning five for the Cyclones. Iowa State ended the set 25-22.
SET THREE
Six Cyclones had at least one kill for the Cyclones in the third set, but after seven ties and three lead changes, Omaha took the set to keep the match going with a set score of 25-19.
SET FOUR
Behind the serving of Rachel VanGorp, the Cyclones put together a run of eight in set four. The run included six kills by the duo of Amiree Hendricks-Walker and Goolsby. Omaha came back tying it at 17s, but from there the Cyclones took over winning it 25-21 on a kill by Goolsby assisted by Brandt.
NEXT UP
Iowa State faces a pair of Big Ten opponents next week on the road, meeting Iowa for the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series in Coralville on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. ISU then heads to the Illinois Tournament to meet Eastern Illinois and Illinois Sept. 19-20.
